“In Protest of Our Ever-Virgin Mary” (and other hooliganisms)

Russian riot grrrls Pussy Riot are still sitting in jail for their performance of ‘Mother of God, Cast Putin Out!’ at Christ the Savior Cathedral.

You have to admit, that song title is pretty great.

And what a venue!

Here’s the article. It’s called, ‘God Condemns Pussy Riot’. (I love how everyone always knows what God is thinking–it’s so awesome.)

The band is charged with “hooliganism”, and several of the women face up to seven years in prison. And who are we to deny them of their deserving prison sentence for such hooliganic behavior? After all, as the priest in the article claims, God told him they were blasphemers, so, you know . . . it must be true.

Below is their performance. The only Russian I know is Dostoyevsky, so it’s a little hard for me to follow. Fortunately, the lyrics are printed underneath for your spiritual aggrandizement.

Personally, I think their dancing skills leave something to be desired, but still . . . talk about performance art, right?

You go, riot grrrl! (Sorry, that was totally uncalled for. )

Lyrics:

St. Maria, Virgin, Drive away Putin
Drive away! Drive away Putin!

Black robe, golden epaulettes
All parishioners are crawling and bowing
The ghost of freedom is in heaven
Gay pride sent to Siberia in chains

The head of the KGB is their chief saint
Leads protesters to prison under escort
In order not to offend the Holy
Women have to give birth and to love

St. Maria, Virgin, become a feminist
Become a feminist, Become a feminist

Church praises the rotten dictators
The cross-bearer procession of black limousines
In school you are going to meet with a teacher-preacher
Go to class – bring him money!

Patriarch Gundyaev believes in Putin
Bitch, you better believe in God
Belt of the Virgin is no substitute for mass-meetings
In protest of our Ever-Virgin Mary!

St. Maria, Virgin, Drive away Putin
Drive away! Drive away Putin!

No surprise here. Big government as in institution and its politicians as practitioners are inherently evil and corrupt, and are especially fearful of free speech. How many free thinking people need to be incarcerated in gulags for the “crime” of expressing their opinions before academy leaders becomes tolerant enough to support free speech for everyone, including those with whom they disagree? The following website illustrates academy leadership intolerance by citing the “12 Worst Colleges for Free Speech in 2012, http://thefire.org/article/14328.html.

Agreed. I’ll take my riot grrrls over any politician any day of the week!

No surprise on some of these issues regarding free speech. I knew Harvard would be there!

As I’m sure you’ll agree, a few of these instances are not as black and white as painted here. For instance, the fraternities (an ongoing problem at a number of institutions) shouting violent obscenities to, specifically, women, is a form of harassment that terrorizes, belittles, and positions these women into a position of submission in so much as they just have to ‘take it’, and it creates violent atmosphere that women should have the ‘right’ to not have to endure (just as it did in the 60′s with white people exercising their ‘free speech’ to harass people of color). So, when the school says, “You cannot do that”, this is not simply a matter of, “You’ve trampled on my rights!” as much as you have the competing claims of rights of the people being jeered at to not have to endure being harassed. This is especially the case, for instance, at private universities where your social contract with them extends their power over you to determine what you can and cannot say and wear. So, while just as some fundamentalist universities actually police interracial dating (or forbid same sex relations), the opposite end of the spectrum also has a tendency to police those they deem ‘dangerously’ conservative. It’s a mess, to be sure. The issues, in some cases, is how we allow speech that does actively do harm and where that line is drawn for the protection of our citizens. It’s not always easy to know, but the lovely thing about a participatory form of democracy (I’ve heard rumors that these exist) is that we are the government and we can make these sort of decisions.

Well, sometimes. I don’t know. But yeah, in the case with Pussy Riot (thank God I’m allowed to write that without being policed on here–ahhh….ya see!?), if their actions could be considered a form of trespassing that would be one thing, but it seems that they are just expressing their frustrations with their government (and its connections to the Church–which is interesting given Russia’s history) and the government (or the Church) is just not having it. That’s why these gals wear masks. They’re have no real choice. As the great punk rock band Anti-Flag once wrote, “Why do you make us scream at you?” (That’s a paraphrase, I need to find the actual quote).

Awesome tirade!! I agree completely … I wish commonsense wasn’t dead!

I want to just point out the old bitch in green that keeps trying to keep people from filming. Genius. Also, I don’t know what you were talking about, those dance moves were fab.

We mentioned Pussy Riot in class briefly on Wednesday actually. I think they’re some bad ass devushkas. But with a band name like Pussy Riot would we really expect less?

That old ‘bitch’ is my fairy godmother. So back off.
