I just received a copy of Michael Long’s Christian Peace and Nonviolence: A Documentary History. I’m pretty excited about it and would love to give you a full-blown review but that’s reserved for a future journal entry.

I can tell you this much: it’s quite thorough and contains sections of scripture, works from the early church, the medieval church, the reformation, modernity, and the contemporary church. It’s also very eclectic including readings from: Cyprian, Arnobius, Pelagius, Lucretia Mott, Jakob Hutter, George Fox, Sojourner Truth, Clarence Darrow, Marjorie Swann, Cesar Chavez, Jaques Ellul, William Stringfellow, Carter Heyward, Takashi Nagai, and Miroslav Volf. And, I mean, that’s like a fifth of the people included. There’s many more (and not just western sources either), so order a copy and read what your favorite practitioner of nonviolence has to say. Chances are you will need their words and witness as I assume you are surrounded by far more Christians willing to kill than not.
