The board of directors of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) U.S. recently, and unanimously, decided that they will not invest in companies that “benefit from products or services used to perpetrate acts of violence against Palestinians, Israelis and other people groups.”
Okay, I know. I can’t believe we had to vote on that one, but still . . . at least it’s ‘official’. Okay, so, much of the crux here is that while it is legal to invest and/or support goods for state sanctioned violence (as that kind of violence is legitimate), it is illegal to support/invest in anything Palestinian as their violence is ruled criminal.
[All I see are criminals.]
Of course, Mennonites are not going to support ‘illegal’ acts of violence any more than ‘legal’ acts of violence. I think we just want to point out the kind of hypocrisy that employs one form of violence while decrying an another. MCC director, J. Ron Byler explains, “We will take action if we become aware of offenders against Israel, but our government ensures we do no harm to Israel, while there is no such care for Palestinians. With our partners, we desire peace, justice and reconciliation for all.”
‘For all’. Ha! How cute. I wonder what world these people think we’re living in?
