Conference Statement

The liturgy is said to contain, transmit, and partake in the central mysteries of the Christian faith. It plays a crucial and indispensable role in mediating between people’s life-worlds and the Christ event. The well-known Latin expression lex orandi, lex credendi confirms the idea that there is (and should be) a concordance between the Church’s life of prayer and the content of what it believes, that is to say, between liturgy and faith. However, the question of how precisely this connection is to be conceived of still requires considerable reflection and research. The LEST-9 Congress aims at contributing to the ongoing discussions about the ways in which the mysteries of faith are mediated and how Christian liturgies can or must be understood. In so doing, it engages fundamental and systematic theology as well as liturgical scholarship. […]

Call for Papers

We proudly invite the international community of scholars to submit topical papers for the upcoming LEST IX conference. Please follow the links below for submission guidlines, dates, and documents.  Research topics for proposed papers can include but are not limited to:

  • a. The relationship between lex orandi and lex credendi in terms of continuity and discontinuity.
  • b. Reflection on the theological, philosophical, and/or historical underpinnings of mystery, liturgy, and sacrament.
  • c. Systematic or liturgical perspectives on the formal, ritual, and practical aspects of liturgies and Christian worship.
  • d. The impact and reception of Vatican II, and specifically the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, in commemoration of its 50th anniversary of promulgation.
  • e. Conceptions of and opinions about liturgical reform and its relation with the development of doctrine(s).
  • f. The state of relations between the theological disciplines, especially but not limited to systematics and liturgical studies. This includes historical perspectives, philosophical reflection, and the future of this relationship.
  • g. Ecumenical considerations on mystery, liturgy, worship, and how these can inform or be informed by ecumenism in the 21st century.
  • h. Case studies and critical author studies pertaining to the role of liturgy and worship in Church and society, the importance of liturgy for theologizing, liturgy and spirituality, liturgy and ethics, etc.
