Last November saw the release of the excellent and
illuminating (and convicting) book by Daniel Bell Jr.,–the latest in the Church and Postmodern Culture Series–The Economy of Desire: Christianity and Capitalism in a Postmodern World. Bell’s book features interactions with Deleuze and Foucault, as well as exhibits Bell’s breadth and depth at navigating the field of economic theory. Yet best of all, his clarity of style and faithfulness to the series’ commitment to bring high-level theological and philosophical discussions into the vernacular and make them available for academics and practitioners is really quite fantastic. (Full disclosure: although I am one of the coordinators of this blog, this is strictly my opinion of Bell’s book. I just read it this month and will be recommending it widely. It commend it to you as well.)
