Lori A. Kanitz

Lori A. Kanitz earned a PhD in literature and theology from the University of St. Andrews in St. Andrews, Scotland. She serves as the project director of federal grants with the Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty after previously serving as the assistant director of Baylor’s Institute for Faith and Learning. Her research centers on the intersections of theology, literature, and culture, particularly with regard to hunger, poverty, ecology, and social innovation. Her work has been published in Christian Higher Education, the Encyclopedia of Christian Literature, and Last Things: Essays on Ends and Endings, and she is the author of A Literary Shema: Annie Dillard’s Judeo-Christian Vision and Voice.

Proximity, Justice, and the Imagining Heart

As a professor and administrator at Christian universities, I have spent my entire career thinking about moral formation. The collective aim of our educational efforts, as I have understood them, is to graduate students who are not only highly skilled but also humane, students who had been invited into experiences, both inside and outside of the classroom, that habituate the theological and cardinal virtues—love, faith, hope, prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.
